Statesboro, GA – The University of Maine football program was defeated by FBS opponent Georgia Southern on Saturday night, 45-17.
Carter Peevy got the Black Bears on the board first as he broke off a 27-yard rushing touchdown on the fifth play of the opening drive for Maine.
Malcolm Folk forced the first takeaway of the game on 3
rd and 4 in the first quarter as he poked the ball free on a rush up middle.
Jamaree Gibson collected the loose ball.
Georgia Southern tied it up at 7-7 on a 3-yard rush in the first quarter.
The Eagles kicked a field goal to take the lead at 11:24 in the second quarter.
Georgia Southern scored on a 3-yard rush in the second quarter to make it 17-7.
Devin Vaught recorded the first interception of the season for the Black Bears with a 76-yard pick-6, a play set up by Ta'Kai Chisolm as he knocked the ball into the air on a pass over the middle.
Georgia Southern opened up the second half with a 1-yard rushing touchdown to make it 24-14.
Samuel Tremblay connected on a 33-yard field goal to shrink the Eagles lead down to a single score at 24-17.
Georgia Southern responded with a 25-yard touchdown reception to double their lead to 31-17.
The Eagles recovered a fumble and scored a 12-yard touchdown on the following play to make it 38-17.
Georgia Southern capped off their scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run with 8:53 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Notes:
- Black Bears scored first against both of their FBS opponents on the season.
- Vaught's pick-6 was the first defensive touchdown of the season for the Black Bears and the interception was the fourth of his career and second touchdown he has scored.
Maine returns to Orono for their next game against NC A&T in a CAA matchup on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 3:30 PM.
