Orono, ME – The University of Maine baseball team shutout UMass Lowell in win on Saturday afternoon. It was the first shutout of the season for the Black Bears.
Black Bear Scoring Breakdown:
Maine broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as
Chris Bear hit a sac-fly to center field, scoring
Myles Sargent (2B) and
Brody Rasmussen hit an infield single to bring home
Damon Gaither (1B).
The Black Bears scored three runs in the 6
th on a single by Sargent that scored
Drew Reynolds (BB) and an error by the left fielder allowed
Payton Whitehead (1B) to score on the play.
Zach Martin hit a pinch-hit double to center field to score Sargent (2B) to cap off the inning.
Whitehead hit an RBI double to left field in the sixth inning, scoring Reynolds (BB) before Maine scored four runs in the eighth to win in a mercy rule.
Dean O'Neill doubled home two runs in Bear (1B) and Martin (1B), Whitehead hit a sac-fly to right field, scoring Rasmussen (HBP) and
Evan Menzel ended the contest on a single to right field, scoring O'Neill (2B).
Black Bear Pitchers:
Caleb Leys turned in back-to-back strong starts for the Black Bears as he fired off 7-shutout innings of work on the mound. He allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 9 batters.
Tommy Martin was the lone reliever used as he retired the three batters he faced in the eighth inning, striking out 1.
