Baseball Picks up First Series Sweep of the Season as they Took Both Ends of a Doubleheader on Sunday at UAlbany

Leys and Gambardella allowed 0 Earned Runs in 11 combined innings

Albany, NY – The University of Maine baseball team swept the Great Danes of UAlbany with a pair of wins on Sunday in a doubleheader.

GAME ONE (7 Inn.) --

Black Bear Scoring Breakdown:

Myles Sargent got Maine on the board first as he hit a sac-fly in the second inning, scoring Payton Whitehead (BB).

Brody Rasmussen added another two runs in the frame as he singled home both Evan Menzel (1B) and Aidan Bardi (BB). Dean O'Neill capped off the four-run inning with an RBI single to left field, scoring Chris Bear (BB).

Maine broke the game open in the sixth inning as seven runs came into score.

O'Neill got the scoring going with a two-run single to left field, bringing home Jack Quigley (PR – SB) and Bear (HBP).

Evan Menzel brought home two on a single to left field, scoring Rasmussen (BB) and O'Neill (1B).

Aidan Bardi brought home Whitehead (BB) on a sac-fly, Menzel (1B) scored on a wild pitch and Quinn Murphy singled home Sargent (2B).

Black Bear Pitchers:

Caleb Leys (3-1) went 5 innings on the mound as he continued his dominant stretch in America East play as he allowed 2 unearned runs on 3 hits, 1 walk and striking out 7.

Tommy Martin was the lone reliever used in game one as he allowed 1 run on 1 hit and 3 strikeouts.

UAlbany Recap:

The Great Danes scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning, and one in the seventh.

Matthew Mariano (1-5) took the loss on the mound.

GAME TWO (7 Inn. – Mercy Rule) –

Black Bear Scoring Breakdown:

Maine put up six runs in the opening frame, starting off with a two-run double by Reynolds that scored both Rasmussen (BB) and O'Neill (1B).

Bardi brought home Reynolds (2B) on an infield single, Sargent brought home Menzel (BB) on a single to left field and Damon Gaither capped off the inning with a two-run double to left field, scoring both Sargent (1B) and Bardi (1B).

O'Neill brought home Rasmussen (E8) for the lone run in the second frame.

Rasmussen brought home two runs in the third on a single through the left side, scoring both Bardi (1B) and Bear (1B). O'Neill brought home Rasmussen (1B – SB) on a single to center field.

Whitehead singled home Rasmussen (BB) in the sixth inning before Myles Sargent capped off the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh inning. The home run was his team-leading sixth of the year.

Black Bear Pitchers:

Gianni Gambardella (3-2) was nearly perfect in his 6 innings of work as he allowed just 1 hit while striking out 4.

Jason Libby pitched the final frame of the mercy rule shortened contest, allowing 1 run on 1 walk and striking out 1 in the seventh.

UAlbany Recap:

Thomas Quinn (3-2) took the loss on the mound.
