Softball drops doubleheader at UMass Lowell

Rieth registers career-high 10 strikeouts in game one

LOWELL, Mass. -- The University of Maine softball team fell by scores of 3-1 and 6-3 in its series opening doubleheader at UMass Lowell in Friday afternoon.

How it happened:
  • The Black Bears opened the scoring in the top of the first on Bailey Snowberger's RBI single up the middle, scoring Francesca Guerrera.
  • UMass Lowell tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Emily Baumes single down the right field line plated Elizabeth Neeld.
  • The River Hawks tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Avery Spinello was able to reach on an error, with the mishap bringing in Kate Hardy and Taylor Dolan.
Game notes:
  • Alysen Rieth struck out a career-high 10 batters while surrendering just one earned run in the loss.
  • Guerrera, Snowberger, and Abby Rhee recorded Maine's three hits

How it happened:
  • UMass Lowell jumped out to an early lead, plating three in the home half of the first.
  • The Black Bears cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth when Maggie Helms reached on a throwing error by the River Hawk shortstop. The error allowed Keira Inman to score unearned on the play.
  • The River Hawks responded with a two-run bottom of the fourth as Baumes scored on Emily Tow's double to left before Tow's later scored on Madi Wade's double to right.
  • UMass Lowell pushed its lead out to 6-1 when Tow's again scored, this time on a single to the gap in left center by Wade.
  • Maine added two runs in the top of the seventh as Gabby Papushka's triple down the right field line plated Eviana Robles and Madison Hand.
Game notes:
  • Madison Simmerman tossed 3.2 innings for Maine, surrendering five runs on six hits. Ava Zettlemoyer pitched 2.1 innings in relief, giving up a run with one strikeout.
  • Pupushka drove in two runs for Maine while Rhee added her second run of the day.
Maine closes out the weekend series with the River Hawks on Saturday with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
