Maine falls in America East opener at Bryant

Bailey Snowberger had five hits on the day.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The University of Maine softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in the America East opener at Bryant's Conaty Park.

How it Happened
  • Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with Gabby Papushka reaching on an error before eventually scoring on a Francesca Guerrera single.
  • The Bulldogs put three runs up in the bottom of the second.
  • Maine pushed one run across in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game as Keira Inman singled in Guerrera, who had doubled to lead off the inning, and Papushka drove in Maggie Helms with a double of her own in the fifth … Bryant, though, went back up 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Bulldogs tacked on five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning

How it Happened
  • For the second game in a row, the Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Bailey Snowberger driving in the run on an infield single.
  • After scoreless second and third frames, the Bulldogs erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning.
  • Maine began to chip away at the deficit, with Snowberger's first career home run making it 7-4.
  • In the top of the sixth, Maine came back to take an 8-7 lead … first a Morgan Pool double drove in one run and then a Gabby Papushka single drove in a pair … Snowberger again doubled to plate Papushka for an 8-7 lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, though, Bryant was able to equalize and win with back-to-back singles up the middle.
Game Notes
  • Madison Simmerman started, throwing 4.0 innings … Kaly Thomas threw 2.0 innings in relief while Alysen Rieth appeared for 0.1.
  • Bailey Snowberger went 4-for-4 with five RBI, with two singles, one double and one home run.
  • Snowberger's four hits and her five RBI both mark season-highs for the Black Bears.
  • Gabby Papushka (1-for-4) drove in two runs and scored two runs,
  • Six Black Bears recorded hits in the game.

  • Maine and Bryant will close out the weekend series tomorrow with a 12 p.m. game at Conaty Park.
