Maine fell 5-3 in the first game and 1-0 in the second.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The University of Maine softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Iona on Tuesday afternoon at Donald E. Walsh Field.

How it Happened

Iona took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning with a home run to left field.
Both teams were then scoreless until the bottom of the fifth frame when Iona manufactured four runs … the Gaels had a two-run single up the middle and a two-run single to right center field.
Gabby Papushka led off the top of the seventh with a single for Maine and the Black Bears went on to load the bases with one out thanks to a Morgan Pool hit by pitch and a Francesca Guerrera single.
Papushka eventually scored on a Keira Inman sacrifice fly and then Madison Hand drove in two runs with a single up the middle but

Game Notes

Alysen Rieth started, throwing 4.2 innings while giving up five runs on eight hits with six walks and four strikeouts … Ava Zettlemoyer threw 1.1 innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
Gabby Papushka, Francesca Guerrera and Madison Hand were all 1-for-3.
Hand recorded two RBI while Keira Inman had one.

How it Happened

The teams played scoreless through three full frames before the Gaels pushed a run across in the bottom of the fourth when a lead-off single eventually crossed the plate three batters later.
There were then two more scoreless innings before the Black Bears threatened … Madison Hand walked and moved over on an Eviana Robles single but the Gaels shut down the threat for the 1-0 final.

Game Notes

Madison Simmerman started, throwing all 6.0 innings while giving up five hits and one run – unearned – and striking out one and walking two.
Eviana Robles recorded the lone Maine hit of the game … Madison Hand earned two walks.
Keira Inman registered a stolen base.
