Black Bears top Warriors, earn series victory

Maine won 9-6 on Sunday to take the three-game set.

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The University of Maine softball team earned a 9-6 win over Merrimack in a back-and-forth affair on Sunday at Warrior Softball Stadium.

Maine wins the non-conference series, two games to one.

How it Happened
  • Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first – with Gabby Papushka driving in Bailey Snowberger – and then Merrimack responded by taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom half.
  • After Merrimack plated a pair in the second inning, Maine answered with two runs in the third … Papushka and Francesca Guerrera had back-to-back doubles and then Morgan Pool put down a sacrifice bunt to equalize things at 4-4.
  • The Warriors again went up, pushing one run across in the fourth for a 5-4 lead that would hold until the top of the sixth.
  • Immy Gie scored on a fielder's choice and then Pool sent a three-run shot over the fence in right center field for an 8-6 lead.
  • Guerrera drove in an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the 9-6 final.
Game Notes
  • Alysen Rieth started, throwing 6.0 innings while giving up five runs – four earned – on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks … Ava Zettlemoyer threw 1.0 innings while giving up one run and one hit with two strikeouts and three walks.
  • Morgan Pool was 1-for-2 with three RBI and two walks … she hit her first career home run.
  • Gabby Papushka went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBI.
  • Francesca Guerrera was 2-for-5 with two RBI while Immy Gie also had multiple hits with a 2-for-3, two walks earned performance.
  • Gie, Papushka and Bailey Snowberger each had one stolen base.
  • With the series win, Maine earns its first three-or-more game series win since going 3-1 against Binghamton in a four-game set in April 2021.
