ALBANY, N.Y. -- The No. 4 seeded University of Maine women's basketball team (15-16) saw its season come to an end with a 49-41 loss at No. 1 UAlbany (26-5) in the America East semifinals on Monday evening.
Maine, which led by as many as seven in the contest, was led by
Asta Blauenfeldt and
Sera Hodgson who each tallied 11 points. Blauenfeldt finished the evening 4-of-8 with a pair of triples and two rebounds while Hodgson knocked down 3-of-6 from three-point range.
Caroline Bornemann posted five points, seven rebounds, and five assists and ends her career 18th on Maine's all-time scoring list with 1,162 and 11th with 739 rebounds.
The Black Bears put together a solid defensive effort in the game in which they held UAlbany to just 19-of-51 (37.3) from the field, 3-of-14 from three-point range.
Maine jumped out to a 9-2 advantage on a trio of triples from Hodgson, building its largest lead of the contest just 3:41 into the first quarter.
UAlbany answered, trimming the deficit to just a pair at 12-10 after one.
Leading by three early in the second quarter,
Olivia Rockwood's driving layup and a slashing lay-in from
Sarah Talon rebuilt Maine's lead to seven with 7:29 left in the half.
Kayla Cooper's bucket off a turnover ended the first half as Maine's lead would stand at three, 23-20, at the break.
The Great Danes, who took their first lead of the contest with 6:35 left in the third, would go on to outscore the Black Bears 18-11 in the quarter. Jessica Tomasetti's triple with just five-seconds left in the third sent UAlbany into the fourth with a 38-34 advantage.
UAlbany would hit the first to buckets of the final quarter, building its lead out to eight.
Maine would not go quietly as Bornemann's 5-0 run brought the Black Bears back to within three with 4:56 to play.
However, it would be as close as Maine could get as the Great Danes responded with a 7-0 run before securing the victory, 49-41.
