BALTIMORE, Md. --
Caroline Bornemann registered a game-high 21 points as the Black Bears came up short at UMBC by a final of 71-53. The loss slips Maine back to 12-12 overall and 7-4 in America East action while UMBC climbs to 12-10, 5-5 in league play.
Bornemann, who has posted 20-plus points in back-to-back outings, shot 7-of-15 from the floor with three triples to go along with five rebounds.
Paula Gallego joined Bornemann in double-digits with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
The difference was on the foul line where UMBC finished the day 23-of-24 from the stripe.
Maine, which shot 7-of-14 from the field in the first quarter, used an early 10-0 run to jump out to a 10-3 lead. Bornemann worked off an offensive rebound to hit a jumper to start the run. Triples from Gallego and
Sera Hodgson extended Maine's lead to five before a layup off a turnover from Bornemann put Maine up seven with 5:38 left in the first.
The run continued when Bornemann's triple off a turnover gave Maine its largest lead of the day, 13-5.
UMBC rallied with an 11-0 run spanning the end of the first and start of the second to take a 21-18 lead with 8:04 left in the first half.
Bornemann's triple tied things at 21-all before a pair of Dotsey free throws put the Black Bears back on top, 25-23.
It would be the last time Maine would lead.
UMBC closed the half with an 11-4 run to take a 34-29 lead into the break.
The Black Bears drew within three early in the third but the Retrievers answered with a 7-0 run to take their first double-digit lead of the day, 45-35, with 3:57 remaining in the third.
Maine was unable to close within more than eight the rest of the way as UMBC outscored the Black Bears 22-14 in the fourth to secure the victory, 71-53.
Maine returns to action when it travels to meet Vermont on Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.
