Maine Athletics to host former AD Kevin White for series of events on campus

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine athletics department is pleased to welcome former athletic director Kevin White, Ph.D. back to Orono for a series of free speaking events aligned with the release of his book titled, "The Good Sport".

As part of his visit, White will host a pair of discussions at UMaine beginning with a Q&A and book signing session for students at Donald P. Corbett room 100 from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13.

On Friday, Feb. 14, White will be joined by Greg Powell, Chief Executive Officer and President of the Harold Alfond Foundation, and Walter Abbott ('58), UMaine football letterwinner, coach, interim athletic director and UMaine Sports Hall of Famer, for a fireside chat and book signing at Wells Central Pub's 'Traditions' room at 5 p.m.

Both events are free to attend with no reservation needed in advance.

White, who served as athletic director at UMaine from 1987-91, went on to serve in the same role at Tulane, Arizona State, and Notre Dame before ending his career with a 13-year stint as athletic director at Duke until his retirement in 2021.

Named the third most powerful person in college football by Sports Illustrated in 2003 and Sporting News Power 100 most powerful athletic director in 2004, White was named the athletic director of the year by the Sports Business Journal in 2015.

In The Good Sport, White takes an unflinching look at the current state of intercollegiate sports, including the tumultuous changes brought on by the Supreme Court's landmark decision on name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights. Drawing on his decades of leadership, White examines the chaos, challenges, and opportunities of this new era - and why he believes the future of college sports hangs in the balance.
