Vachon sets all-time UMaine women's basketball head coach wins record as Maine downs UNH

Vachon registered her 168th career victory

ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine head coach Amy Vachon surpassed former Black Bears head coach Joanne Palombo-McCallie to become the all-time winningest head coach in UMaine women's basketball history with her 168th victory as the Black Bears defeated New Hampshire by a final of 62-48.

Asta Blauenfeldt guided Maine to victory with 18 points, seven of which coming in the fourth quarter, with four triples. Caroline Bornemann posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six assists and four steals while Paula Gallego turned in 13 points.

Maine, which shot 23-of-45 from the floor including 10-of-20 from three-point range, outscored New Hampshire 21-12 in the fourth quarter while shooting 6-of-10 with four triples in the final frame.

The Black Bears, who never trailed in the game, raced out to a 13-4 lead at the midway point of the first quarter behind triples from Blauenfeldt and Sera Hodgson.

The lead stretched to 11 on a driving bucket from Blauenfeldt late in the opening quarter as the Black Bears carried a double-digit lead, 16-6, into the second quarter.

After New Hampshire responded to cut the deficit to six, Maine answered with a 10-0 run to take its largest lead of the night.

The run, in which Maine held the Wildcats scoreless over a six minute stretch, started with five consecutive points by Caroline Dotsey. Hodgson's layup off a turnover pushed the lead to 13 before Gallego's three put the Black Bears on top, 32-16.

Maine entered the break with its largest lead of the game, 34-18.

The Wildcats would outscore Maine 18-7 in the third period, at one point closing the gap to just two, as the Black Bears moved to the fourth quarter holding a 41-36 edge.

Gallego's bucket off an offensive board and a triple from Blauenfeldt extended the lead back out to double-digits, 46-36, just 1:14 into the final quarter.

New Hampshire battled back, cutting the lead to six, before Maine responded with an 8-2 run as Olivia Rockwood's triple pushed the lead to 12 with 3:35 to play.

Maine's lead would not dip below nine the rest of the way as the Black Bears closed the game out on a 5-0 run to secure the 62-48 victory.

Maine concludes the regular season when it visits Bryant on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip.
