Charleston, SC – The University of Maine baseball team was defeated in the series finale at The Citadel on Sunday afternoon.
Black Bears Scoring Breakdown:
Damon Gaither brought home a run for the Black Bears in the ninth as he pinch-hit and scored
Payton Whitehead (BB-SB).
Maine added on two more runs in the frame as
Chris Bear hit a two-run double down the left field line, scoring
Jack Quigley (BB) and
Eric Wainwright (BB) on the play.
Black Bear Pitchers:
Gabe Gifford (0-1) got the start for the second-straight Sunday but it lasted only one inning as
Owen Wheeler took over on the mound to begin the second frame. Gifford allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks.
Wheeler lasted 3 innings in relief as he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, 1 walk and striking out 5.
Pierce Friedman pitched the fifth inning for the Black Bears, allowing 1 unearned run on 1 hit, 2 hit batters and 1 walk.
Bailey Goss and
Brennan Rumpf made their collegiate debuts on the mound in the sixth frame. Goss failed to record an out before handing the ball off the Rumpf, allowing 2 runs on 2 walks and a hit batter.
Jason Libby began the seventh on the mound for Maine. Rumpf retired all three batters he faced in the sixth.
Libby went 2 innings in relief, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, 1 walk and striking out 3.
The Citadel Recap:

Ben Brash (1-1) picked up the win on the mound, allowing no runs on 5 hits and 4 strikeouts.
