CLINTON, S.C. – The University of Maine softball team opened up the 2025 season on Friday, falling to East Tennessee State, 12-6, and Presbyterian College, 6-5.

How it Happened
- The Buccaneers plated three runs in the first inning and then added two runs in each of the next two frames for a 7-0 lead after three.
- After ETSU took a 10-run lead in the top of the sixth, Maine was able to push five across in the bottom half of the frame … Nora Campo led off with a walk and then Kyli Hernandez singled the runner over and Keira Inman got herself on … Maine's patience then paid off as the Black Bears earned  three straight walks … Francesca Guerrera's sacrifice fly and two more walks helped push five across.
- ETSU responded with two more runs and then Inman scored her second run of the game on an error for the 12-6 final.
Game Notes
- Ava Zettlemoyer started, going 2.0 winnings while allowing five runs on six hits … in 1.0 innings of work, Kaly Thomas gave up two runs on three hits while striking out three … Madison Simmerman threw 4.0 innings in what was her collegiate debut.
- Hernandez recorded Maine's lone hit of the game while Immy Gie registered two RBI ... Gabby Papushka, Madison Hand, Guerrera and Campo each had an RBI.
- Inman went 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
- Simmerman, Guerrera, Bailey Snowberger, and Abby Rhee all made their collegiate debuts.

How it Happened
- The Black Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first … Papushka doubled in Snowberger and then advanced to third on a fielding error … Papushka then scored on a sacrifice fly from Gie.
- The Blue Hose responded in the third inning, plating four runs.
- In the top of the fourth, Campo then sent a solo home to left field.
- The hosts pushed the lead back to 6-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth.
- Maine kept the bats alive in the top of the sixth … a Hernandez single and an Inman single pushed a pair across for the 6-5 final.
Game Notes
- Alysen Rieth started and threw all 6.0 innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits … Rieth struck out four and walked three.
- Gie (2-for-3), Guerrera (2-for-4) and Kyrah Haba-Dailey (2-for-4) had multi-hit games for the Black Bears.
- Gie, Guerrera and Papushka had doubles.
- Gie recorded a stolen base.
- Morgan Pool and Eviana Robles made their collegiate debuts.
