ORONO, Maine – Adrianna Smith posted her fifth double-double of the season to guide Maine to a 54-45 victory over Boston University on Monday evening.
Smith concluded the night with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Sarah Talon posted double-figure scoring for the second-straight game with 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals.
Maine's defense, which held the Terriers to single-digit scoring total in both the first and third quarters, forced 21 turnovers with 11 steals.
The Terriers took their first lead of the game, 9-8, with 3:42 left in the opening quarter.
Maine responded by ending the first on a 6-0 run, all coming from Smith, to build a five point lead, 14-9, moving into the second.
The Black Bears, leading by three early in the second, put together a 5-0 run keyed by a triple from Maddie Fitzpatrick to take their largest lead of the first half, 21-13.
Boston University answered with a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to one.
Maine entered the break with a 24-20 lead on 13 points from Smith.
The Black Bears built a comfortable lead by outscoring the Terriers 18-8 in the third quarter.
Leading by four early in the third, Smith hit back-to-back buckets before Talon swiped a steal and took it coast-to-coast to give Maine its first double-digit lead of the night, 33-23.
A steal and fastbreak bucket from Talon concluded the third quarter as Maine's lead would stand at 42-28 moving to the fourth.
A turnaround jumper by Lizzy Gruber began the final quarter, adding to Maine's 9-0 run to give the hosts its largest lead of the evening, 44-28.
The lead would not dip under six the rest of the way as Maine secured its second-straight victory, 54-45.
The Black Bears return to action on Thursday when they travel to take on Penn at 6 p.m.
