Adrianna Smith posted 26 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season as the University of Maine women's basketball team registered its first victory of the season, defeating Stonehill 79-53 on Monday evening.
Smith, who added four assists to her night in which she finished 10-of-15 from the floor, joined Liz Wood as the only Black Bears in program history to eclipse 1,200 points, 700 rebounds, and 300 assists in a career.
Asta Blauenfeldt stretched her double-digit scoring streak to nine-straight with a 14 point performance on 6-of-9 shooting while
Lizzy Gruber posted a career-high 13 points off the bench.
Maine dominated the rebounding column by a 45-31 margin with 16 offensive boards while shooting 32-for-69 (46.4) from the floor. The Black Bears held a 21-5 advantage in points off turnovers and a 44-26 edge in points from the paint.
The Black Bears distanced themselves from Stonehill by outscoring the Skyhawks 49-23 in the second and third quarters combined.
Leading by seven after one quarter, the Black Bears hit 10-of-16 from the floor in the second quarter to build a comfortable lead at the half.
In the second quarter, Maine used a 10-2 run capped by back-to-back buckets from Blauenfeldt, to build a 16-point cushion with 3:15 left in the half.
Stonehill cut the lead down to 13 before Maine closed out the half on a 4-0 run to take its largest lead of the first half, 39-22, into the break.
The Black Bears opened the third quarter on fire as they would start the second half on a 15-2 run to take a commanding 30-point lead, 56-26, with 5:39 left in the third.
The lead continued to expand as back-to-back layups from Gruber gave Maine its largest lead of the ballgame, 65-30.
Maine closed out the fourth to secure its first win of the season, 79-53.
The Black Bears return to action on Sunday, Nov. 23 when they travel to meet Brown at noon.
