Football Wins Fifth-Straight Game with the 28-21 Victory over Stony Brook on Saturday

Couchman records first multi-sack game of the season to lead the defense

Orono, Maine – The University of Maine football team ran their win streak to five-straight games with their 28-21 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon.
 
Maine jumped in front early in the first half as Carter Peevy found Mo Irefin wide open in the back of the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown. The score was Irefin's first receiving touchdown of the season.
 
After a 45-yard run to get the drive going on the second play, Sincere Baines followed it up with another big run, a 24-yard run that he brought to the end zone for his third touchdown of the season.
 
Stony Brook scored with 11 seconds left in the opening half to cut the Black Bear lead down to 14-7 on the 15-yard touchdown reception.
 
Maine averaged 5.8 yards per carry on their 19 carries in the first half. Baines led the way with 76 yards on 7 carries.
 
Peevy had 103 passing yards and a touchdown in a windy first half.
 
Peevy opened up the second half by rushing in his team-leading sixth touchdown of the season, a one-yard carry that capped off the opening drive of the second half for the Black Bears.
 
Daniel Batch concluded the scoring by hauling in his first collegiate touchdown, a 14-yard score that he adjusted for to make a back shoulder catch falling to the sideline.
 
Stony Brook added two, one-yard rushing touchdowns late in the third and fourth quarter to wrap up the game at a final score of 28-21.
 
Notes:
  • Maine hasn't allowed a sack in three-straight games following their clean sheet on Saturday.
  • Batch is the third Black Bear to record their first collegiate touchdown in the last two games for Maine.
  • Latrell Couchman led the way with two sacks on the afternoon, his first multi-sack game of the season.
  • Christ Thomas led all Black Bears with nine tackles on the day.
  • The Black Bears held Stony Brook to three rushing yards as team. The Seawolves entering the contest leading the CAA with more than 180 yards per game rushing.
 
Maine heads on the road for their next matchup as they travel to Hampton on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
