Maine Athletics Honors Pioneers in Women’s Sports with Varsity Letter Presentation Ceremony

Black Bears who competed between 1971-1974 officially honored with varsity letters

ORONO, Maine – On Friday, female student-athletes who competed in six different varsity sports during the 1971-74 era, were officially presented with their varsity letters at a Pioneers in Women's Sports ceremony held at the Dexter Lounge.

As a former letter winner and President of the M Club, I am deeply honored to join in recognizing the remarkable achievements of these pioneering women who paved the way for future generations of female athletes at the University of Maine," said Director of Academic Support and UMaine Sports Hall of Famer, Ann Maxim. "This ceremony is more than just a presentation of varsity letters—it is a celebration of courage, dedication, and perseverance during a time when opportunities for women in collegiate athletics were limited. These Black Bears from the early 1970s demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their sports and to breaking barriers, helping to shape the legacy and future of women's athletics at UMaine. Their contributions extend far beyond the playing fields; they inspired growth, equality, and inclusivity within our athletic community."

The celebration honored female student-athletes who represented the University of Maine between 1971 and 1974 in the varsity sports of basketball, field hockey, gymnastics, skiing, swimming and diving, and volleyball.

The event provided an opportunity for those who did not officially receive their varsity letter during the era in which they competed, to be recognized for their trailblazing efforts, honored for their place in Maine Athletics history, and to be accredited for their role in advancing women's sports.

"On behalf of the M Club and all current and the nearly 20,000 former letterwinners, we honor and thank these trailblazers for their lasting impact," continued Maxim. "This recognition is a testament to their tenacity and an important reminder of the progress made—and the work still ahead—in supporting and celebrating women's sports."

Maine Athletics thanks the University of Maine Foundation, the UMaine Alumni Association, and the M Club for their efforts, research, and support with this project.
