Black Bears advance to America East semifinals with win over UMass Lowell

Maine to host semifinal contest on Monday, March 11 at 6 p.m.

ORONO, Maine -- Adrianna Smith set a new America East record with her 22nd double-double of the season to help lead the Black Bears to a 49-43 victory over No. 8 UMass Lowell in the quarterfinals of the America East playoffs on Friday evening.

The victory advances Maine to its 10th consecutive semifinal appearance as it improves to 19-7 in quarterfinal action and 53-27 overall in conference postseason action. The Black Bears will host the semifinal round on Monday, March 11 at 6 p.m. Tickets for that semifinal contest are available by visiting GoBlackBears.com/tickets.

Smith, who finished with 14 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds, was joined in double-figures by Anne Simon and Caroline Bornemann who each registered 12 points in the win. Bornemann went 5-of-8 from the field while adding nine rebounds. For Simon, it was her 100th career game in double-digits.

Maine dominated on the glass, finishing with a 36-25 rebounding margin with 14 offensive boards while assisting on 13 of its 17 made field goals.

After turning it over seven times in the first half, the Black Bears limited themselves to just a pair of giveaways in the second to finish with nine total; its sixth time with single digits turnovers in a game.

After six lead changes and a pair of ties through the game's first half of action, neither team was able to distance itself. The game was tied 9-9 after one and 19-19 at the half. The River Hawks held the largest lead of the first half at five.

UMass Lowell was able to build out a three point edge with 7:04 left in the third quarter.

Maine responded with a 10-4 run to take a three point lead of its own. Olivia Rockwood and Bornemann each hit triples on either side of a UMass Lowell bucket. The River Hawks regained a one point lead before Maine would close the quarter with baskets from Bornemann and Smith to take a 32-29 lead into the fourth.

Maine's lead would stand at a pair with 3:25 to play before the hosts began to distance itself. A 7-2 run, keyed by a hoop and the harm three-point play from Bornemann, gave Maine its largest lead of the night at 45-38 with just over a minute to play.

The Black Bears closed out the contest with clutch free throws down the stretch to earn the 49-43 quarterfinal victory.
