Black Bears overwhelm UMBC, 76-47

Maine improves to 4-0 in league play

Orono, Maine -- Adrianna Smith posted a season-high 33 points to go along with 12 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season to lead Maine in a 76-47 victory over UMBC on Thursday evening. The win improves Maine to 4-0 in America East action.

The Black Bears, who posted a season-best 32 field goals and a 50.8 percent mark from the floor, finished the night with a decisive 42-23 advantage on the boards in the win. Maine's efficient offense posted 21 assists on its 32 makes.

Maine, which entered the game allowing just 47.7 points per game in league play, has now held three of its last four opponents under 50 points.

Smith finished the evening just one point shy of her career high scoring as she went 14-of-20 from the floor including a perfect 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Anne Simon stretched her double-digit scoring effort to 12 in a row with 10 points to go along with a career-high nine assists while Sarah Talon and Olivia Rockwood each also added 10 point efforts. Caroline Bornemann chipped in a solid effort with eight points and 10 boards.

Maine started strong, opening the contest with a 6-0 run as it was able to hold UMBC scoreless over the opening 5:01 of action.

The Black Bears led by five with 2:46 remaining in the first quarter before UMBC closed the period on an 8-2 run to take a one point lead, 14-13, after the first.

It would be the only lead the Retrievers would have.

Maine would outscore UMBC 21-9 in the next quarter, posting 15 of her 33 points in the second period. The Black Bears opened the quarter with a 10-0 run with nine points coming from Smith. Simon's free throw put Maine up six before Smith's first triple of the contest extended the lead out to nine with 5:15 left in the half.

After UMBC cut the advantage down to four, Maine responded with a 9-0 sprint. Smith's short jumper came before a 15-footer as Maine snagged its first double-digit lead of the night, 32-21. Another deep jumper from Smith concluded the run as Maine took its largest lead of the half, 34-21.

Maine would enter the break with a 34-23 advantage.

Smith continued to power the Black Bears in the third where her second triple of the evening began a 7-0 run of her own. A deep jumper and a bucket in the paint from Smith extended Maine's lead to 21 midway through the third.

Maine continued to cruise into the fourth with the leading standing at 22 at the 5:26 mark of the fourth.

The Black Bears put the game away with a 14-2 run down the stretch in the final period. Simon's triple, putting her into double-digits, started the stretch before four points by Smith. Idan Shlush wrapped up the run with a three to give Maine its largest lead of the night, 76-42.

Maine rolled the rest of the way to move to 4-0 in league action and 11-7 overall with a 76-47 victory.

The Black Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host NJIT at 1 p.m.
