Union, NJ – The University of Maine baseball team dropped game two at NJIT on Saturday afternoon, 5-4.
Second Inning: NJIT got the on board first in the second inning as they bunted home a run and hit a sac-fly to make it a two-run inning.
Third Inning:
Gianni Gambardella began the third inning on the mound for the Black Bears.
Caleb Leys went only 2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Fifth Inning:
Jeremiah Jenkins got the Black Bears on the board as he singled to center field, scoring
Quinn McDaniel (2B) on the play.
NJIT plated their third run of the contest on a bunt single by Andrew Elcock.
Seventh Inning: Grant Vurpillat was called on to begin the seventh inning for NJIT. Aidan Kidd want 6 innings allowing just 1 run on 6 hits, 2 walks, 3 hit batters and striking out 6.
Luke Longo made it 4-1 NJIT as he hit a solo home run to left field.
Eighth Inning:
Jake Rainess tied the contest up on one swing of the bat as he cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field, scoring
Nick White (BB),
Dean O'Neill (HBP) and
Logan Burrill (BB) on the play.
Ninth Inning: Andrew Elcock walked it off for NJIT as he hit a sac-fly to center field, scoring Luke Longo.
Grant Vurpillat (3-2) picked up the win in relief.
Gianni Gambardella (5-3) took the loss for Maine in relief as he went 6 and 1/3 innings in relief, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, 4 walks and striking out 6.
Maine (25-19, 15-5 AE) will look to win the series on Sunday, May 14 against NJIT in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
