Baseball Takes Game Two of the Weekend Series at UMBC, 15-7

Baltimore, MD – The University of Maine baseball team took game one of the Saturday doubleheader at UMBC, 15-7.
 
First Inning: Connor Goodman got the Black Bears on the board in the top of the first frame as he hit a two-run single to left field, scoring Jake Rainess (BB) and Quinn McDaniel (BB).
 
Second Inning: The Black Bears kept up the offensive pressure as Dylan McNary hit a two-run home run to left field, scoring Matt McElwain (HBP). The home run was McNary's second of the season.
 
Jake Rainess added a fifth run in the opening two innings for the Black Bears as he hit a no-doubt home run to left field, making it back-to-back home runs for the Black Bears. The home run was Rainess's fifth of the season.
 
Third Inning: Matt Ryan scored a pair of runs on a double to left field and Luke Trythall scored another on a double to left field. Anthony Swenda tied the contest up at 5-5 as he hit a two-run home run to left field.
 
Fourth Inning: Jake Rainess hit his second home run of the day, this one a three-run home run, to put the Black Bears back in front at 8-5. Matt McElwain (1B) and Dylan McNary (FC) scored on the play.
 
Fifth Inning: Chris Ho began the fifth inning on the mound for UMBC, spelling the end of the day for Jayden Shertel. Shertel gave up 8 earned runs on 5 hits, 3 walks, 1 hit batter and only striking out 2 in his four innings of work.
 
Colton Carson was called on in the fifth inning as Gianni Gambardella left the contest with an apparent injury.
 
Gambardella concluded the contest allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits, 2 walks and striking out 6.
 
UMBC scored a run in the frame on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.
 
Carson couldn't get out of the fifth inning as the Black Bears turned the ball over to Luc Lavigueur. Carson allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits and 1 walk in 1/3 inning of work.
 
Sixth Inning: Dylan McNary got the Black Bears back up three runs as he hit his second home run of the day, third of the season, to make it 9-6 Black Bears.
 
UMBC went back to the bullpen as they brought on Rob Dorn in relief of Chris Ho. Ho lasted 1 inning, allowing 2 earned run on 2 hits and 2 walks.
 
Jeremiah Jenkins added on to the Black Bears lead as he hit a two-run double to left field, scoring Jake Rainess (HBP) and Quinn McDaniel (BB).
 
Connor Goodman capped off the four-run inning as he hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Jenkins.
 
Seventh Inning: Jeremiah Jenkins added to his RBI total on the day as he hit a three-run home run to right field, scoring Dylan McNary (BB) and Quinn McDaniel (1B). The home run was Jenkin's sixth of the season.
 
Caleb Leys began the seventh inning on the mound for the Black Bears, bringing the end of the day for Luc Lavigueur. Lavigueur was great in relief as he went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on 1 hit, no walks and striking out 1.
 
Christian Easley hit a sac-fly to bring home the seventh and final run of the first game for UMBC.
 
Maine came away with the victory, 15-7.
 
Gianni Gambardella (3-1) picked up the win in the start.
 
Jayden Shertel (1-1) took the loss for UMBC.
 
Maine (6-10, 2-0 AE) will be looking for the weekend sweep of UMBC in game two of the doubleheader at 5:00 P.M. on Saturday afternoon.
