Smith scores 33 in loss at UMBC

Black Bears slip to 8-2 in America East play

Baltimore, Md. -- For the third time this season, Adrianna Smith bested 30 points as the sophomore forward poured in 33 points in Maine's 74-57 loss at UMBC. The loss snaps Maine's four-game win streak as the Black Bears fall to 12-10 overall, 8-2 in America East action.

Smith nearly tallied her 13th double-double of the season as she finished with nine rebounds while shooting 13-of-23 from the floor. Caroline Bornemann finished 3-of-4 from beyond the arc with 12 points while Olivia Rockwood added two triples for a six point afternoon.

UMBC outscored Maine 28-3 off turnovers as the Retrievers forced 19 Maine turnovers in the contest.

The Black Bears went 20-of-47 from the floor (42.6) and were outrebounded for the first time in four games.

Maine, which never led in the contest, fell behind by five out of the gate but was able to quickly climb back into the contest. Smith, who scored the first seven points of the game for Maine, hit consecutive buckets to tie the contest at 7-7. It would be the only tie of the game as UMBC snatched the lead with 5:11 left in the first quarter and never trailed again.

The Black Bears fell behind by nine late in the first quarter but answered with a 5-0 run. Rockwood's triple started the sprint before another bucket from Smith, giving her 13 points early in the second quarter, trimmed the deficit to four.

A 12-5 run by UMBC gave the hosts its first double-digit lead of the day, 34-23, with 2:24 left in the opening half.

The Retrievers lead stood at 37-26 at the break.

Maine was unable to cut into the lead in the second half, ultimately falling to UMBC by a final of 74-57.

The Black Bears will attempt to avenge an earlier season loss when they travel to take on Vermont (16-6, 8-2 AE) on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
