Women’s Ice Hockey Fall to #14 Providence in Hockey East Quarterfinals

Providence, RI - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team falls 5-2 to #14 Providence in the Hockey East Quarterfinals.

First Goal (0-1 Providence): 12:11 into the first the Friars struck first. Brooke Becker took control of the puck and passed it ahead to Reichen Kirchmair. Kichmair looked further ahead and with the one timer connected with Caroline Peterson just behind the blue line who skated the rest of the way and shot the puck into the top left corner for the score.

Second Goal (1-1 Maine): Maine would answer 4:48 after the Friars goal. Ida Kuoppala stole the puck from a Providence player and skated down the length of the ice. Just in front of the Friars net, Kuoppala passed to her right side to a wide open Grace Heiting who was able to slap the puck in.

Third Goal (2-1 Maine): Ida Kuoppala would score her own just 33 seconds into the second period on a shorthanded unassisted goal. After a penalty on the Black Bears, Kuoppala quickly stole the puck away from Providence and went the distance to sneak the puck in just under the goalie to give Maine the lead.

Fourth Goal (2-2 Providence): 15:18 into the second Providence tied the game. Lily Hendrickson connected with Ashley Clark just behind center ice. Clark then continued with the puck up and fired a shot on net that snuck in the left side. 

Fifth Goal (2-3 Providence): With 2:28 left in the second period Delaney Couture gave the Friars the lead. Brooke Becker passed to Maddy Coene. Coene connected across to Couture for the goal.

Sixth Goal (2-4 Providence): Providence scored the first points of the third period. Brooke Becker got her third assist of the game starting with the puck. She connected with Maddy Coene who began the strong push up the ice. She passed to Sara Hjalmarsson directly in front of the net who flung the puck up and in.

Seventh Goal (2-5 Providence): 18:28 into the third Providence scored their final goal. Reichen Kirchmair scored the goal with Brooke Becker and Caroline Peterson each picking up an assist.

Anna LaRose finished with 35 saves for Maine.
Hope Walinski earned 30 saves for the Friars.
