Philadelphia, Pa. -- Adrianna Smith and Caroline Bornemann each totaled 18 points as the Black Bears came up short in their non-conference finale, falling at Penn by a final of 72-69.

It was a see-saw contest which featured 20 lead changes and eight ties as the Quakers outscored Maine 23-18 in the final quarter to escape with the victory.

Smith posted her ninth double-double of the season, the 25th of her career, as she finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds and added eight assists, narrowly missing a triple-double. Bornemann also added a double-double, her first of the season, with 18 points on four triples to go along with 10 boards. Bornemann added the 100th triple of her career, making her the 21st player in school history to eclipse 100 three pointers in a career.

Anne Simon posted her eighth-straight game in double-figures with 17 points while Sarah Talon added a season-high 14 points.

Maine finished the contest 23-51 (45.1%) from the floor, including a 6-for-22 mark from downtown to go along with a season-high 17 made free throws.

The Black Bears were edged in the rebounding battle, 34-33.

Maine came out on fire as it opened the first quarter 6-of-12 with four triples in the opening 10 minutes.

Trailing by one in the first, Bornemann's second triple of the day began a 10-0 run for the Black Bears. A bucket from Smith followed before another three by Bornemann pushed Maine's lead to seven. The Black Bears concluded their run when Smith forced a steal at midcourt and raced down the floor for two. The bucket gave Maine its largest lead of the afternoon, 16-7, with 5:46 left in the opening quarter.

Penn answered with a 12-1 run to take the lead, 19-18, early in the second quarter.

The Quakers snatched a two point lead before Maine answered with an 8-0 sprint. Talon started the run with a putback off an offensive board from Smith. Olivia Rockwood and Smith each followed with buckets before Bornemann's jumper put Maine back on top, 28-22.

Maine's lead would stand at 30-28 entering the half.

Talon opened the scoring in the second half with an old fashioned three-point play to give Maine its largest lead of the second half, 33-28.

Penn responded, this time with a 6-0 run to regain a one point lead.

The teams traded the lead five more times in the third quarter as Maine carried a 51-49 advantage into the fourth.
