Susannah Gaines Scores Twice as Women's Soccer Defeats Holy Cross, 2-1

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The University of Maine women's soccer team defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders, 2-1, on Wednesday evening at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium.

First Goal (1-0 Maine): Just under eight minutes into the non-conference bout, Susannah Gaines scored her second goal of the 2022 season. After receiving a throw-in, Abby Kraemer played the ball over Gaines. The super senior took a vicious strike and gave Maine an early 1-0 lead.

Second Goal (2-0 Maine): Jordane Pinette, fresh off her America East Rookie of the Week honors, set up the next Black Bears' scoring opportunity. The rookie lofted a corner kick that was on a direct path to Gaines' forehead. The defender scored her second of the night, this time via the header. At the 16:19 mark, Maine held a 2-0 lead.

Third Goal (2-1 Maine): Holy Cross scored one goal with a little less than six minutes remaining in the Wednesday night contest. Colleen McIlvenna managed to get her foot on an incoming corner kick. It was as close as the Crusaders would get as Maine won, 2-1.

Maine recorded 15 total shots on goal to the Crusaders' 12 while Holy Cross tallied eight corner kicks to the Black Bears' one.

Susannah Gaines scored two times in the opening 16 minutes of the game. Abby Kraemer and Jordane Pinette dished out the two assists.

Kira Kutzinski turned away three shots during her third win of the season.

Next: The Black Bears are back on the pitch Saturday, September 3rd at Quinnipiac. The second road game of the 2022 regular season is scheduled to kick-off at 12:00 pm.
