Maeve Carroll ended her UMaine career on an individual high note after tallying her 1,000th point in the Black Bears 69-44 loss at Boston College in round one of the WNIT on Thursday evening. The Black Bears end their season with a 20-12 overall mark.
Caroline Bornemann, who registered 12+ points in each of her last five games and all four playoff contests, led Maine with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
Anne Simon posted double-digit scoring efforts for the 26th consecutive contest with 14 points while
Alba Orois tallied eight assists. Carroll, who became the 24th player in the history of the program to reach the 1,000 point plateau, added 11 rebounds to finish with double-digit rebound totals for the 27th time in her career.
The Black Bears came out on fire in the first as they were able to build a 10-4 lead just over four minutes into the contest on a triple from Simon. Maine's lead would shrink to a pair later in the first but the Black Bears rallied, putting together an 8-2 to take its largest lead of the evening. A triple from Bornemann build the lead to five. The Eagles would cut the lead to three with a bucket but Maine answered with a 5-0 sprint, with all five points coming from Bornemann, gave Maine its largest lead of the contest, 18-10.
Boston College would end the first quarter on a 6-0 run, cutting the deficit to a pair, before extending the run to a 22-2 sprint. The swing would give the host's a 12 point edge with 3:53 left in the half.
The Eagles, who outscored Maine 22-7 in the second quarter, would enter the half with a 38-25 lead.
Maine would cut into the lead early in the third, piecing together a 5-0 run to bring the deficit back to single digits. Carroll began the run with a tough, left-handed bucket in the paint for her 1,000th point before Bornemann's triple brought Maine back within eight.
However, it would be as close as Maine could tighten the gap.
The Eagles, who would increase their lead to as many as 27 in the fourth, eventually sealed the first round victory, 69-44.
