Maeve Carroll racked up a career-high 32 points as the Black Bears earned their 11th-straight win with a 70-59 decision against UMBC at Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The win moved Maine to 17-10 overall and 14-3 in America East play.
Carroll, who tallied 20 of her game-high 32 points in the first half, finished the game 15-of-17 from the floor with seven rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Anne Simon finished in double-digits for the 19th straight game with 17 points while
Alba Orois added 13 points and seven assists.
Maine, which assisted on 20 of its 30 field goals, turned in a masterful day from the floor as the Black Bears finished the afternoon 30-of-55 (54.5). The hosts, who led by as many as 19, dominated the boards by a 31-22 margin.
UMBC controlled the action early as it was able to build an eight point lead with 3:20 left in the first quarter. However, Maine would close the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a two point lead into the second. Carroll would rattle off eight consecutive points on the run. A bucket from Simon tied things before Carroll's 10th-point on the run put Maine on top, 18-16.
The Black Bears would never trail again.
Maine would outscore UMBC 18-10 in the second quarter, providing the Black Bears with a 10-point cushion at the half.
During the second period, Maine would build a 12 point lead thanks to a 7-0 run. The charge was again fueled by Carroll who tallied four points, along with a triple from Simon, to stretch the Maine lead out to 12.
The Black Bears would enter the break holding a 36-26 advantage.
The lead would not shrink below nine in the third period, before Maine looked to put things away in the fourth.
A 7-0 run, started in the third and carrying over to the fourth, gave Maine a 60-44 edge on an old fashioned three-point play from Orois. Moments later, buckets from
Paula Gallego and Carroll gave Maine its largest lead of the afternoon, 70-51.
Maine would hold on, capturing its 11th consecutive victory by a final of 70-59.
The Black Bears host UMBC in the regular season finale on Sunday at the Cross Insurance Center at 1 p.m.
