PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the Providence College Friars, 4-2, on Friday evening in the Schneider Arena.
Â
First Goal (1-0 #19/RV Providence): The Friars broke the scoreless goal 13 minutes into the first period. While the action was 4-on-4, Brett Berard found the back of the net. Action had quickly shifted from the Providence end, through the neutral zone, and over the Maine blue line. Berard's shot was heavily shielded from
Victor Ostman, who was unable to locate the shot. 12:38 into the opening frame, the Black Bears trailed 1-0.
Â
Second Goal (2-0 #19/RV Providence): Riley Duran snuck behind the entire Maine defense and scored the second goal of the first period for the Friars. Left alone with nothing but ice in his sights, Duran made easy work of his scoring opportunity. After 20:00, the Black Bears trailed 2-0.
Â
Third Goal (3-0 #19/RV Providence): Parker Ford, on an odd man rush, scored the third goal of the evening for the Friars. Nick Pisson passed the puck ahead of the pack, just enough for Ford to breakaway. Ostman did all he could with the incoming Friars' attack. With just under 5:00 remaining in the second period, Maine was behind 3-0.
Â
Fourth Goal (3-1 #19/RV Providence): In the final minutes of the second period,
Keenan Suthers found the back of the net for the Black Bears.
Jack Quinlivan and
AJ Drobot made an absolute mess in front of the Providence net. With the defense occupied, Suthers jammed home the puck. After two complete, Maine trailed 3-1.
Â
Fifth Goal (4-1 #19/RV Providence): Chase Yoder added a short-handed goal for the Friars with just under six minutes remaining in regulation. It was the final goal of the evening for Providence.
Â
Sixth Goal (4-2 #19/RV Providence): While up two men,
Matthew Fawcett cut the deficit in half.
Jack Quinlivan and
Lynden Breen each tallied assists on the play. Unfortunately, it was as close as Maine would get as they dropped the first game in Providence, 4-2.
Â
Notes: Victor Ostman stopped 39 shots for the Black Bears, while Jaxson Stauber tallied 11 saves for Providence.
Â
Maine went 1 for 4 on its power play opportunity, as the Friars were 1-4 on its player advantages.
Â
The Black Bears blocked 16 shots and won 31 face-offs as a team.
Â
