Men's Hockey Drops Final Game with UNH

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, 4-2, on Saturday evening in the Alfond Arena.
 
First Goal (1-0 UNH): While on a five-minute power play, Nick Cafarelli scored the first goal of the evening. Alex Gagne had two shots saved before Cafarelli stuffed the puck into the net. 12:35 into the finale, Maine trailed 1-0.
 
Second Goal (1-1): Matthew Fawcett tied the Hockey East contest at one with a breakaway goal. After finishing the five-minute penalty kill, Cameron Spicer played the puck ahead to a streaking Fawcett. The Quinnipiac transfer did not waste his opportunity and sent the game into the intermission tied at one goal apiece.
 
Third Goal (2-1 Maine): In the opening minute of the second period, Ben Poisson gave the Black Bears a one goal lead. Tim Gould started the scoring opportunity with a pass ahead to Donavan Villeneuve-Houle. The sophomore put the puck directly on Poisson's stick. 00:59 into the second period, Maine led 2-1.
 
Fourth Goal (2-2): The Wildcats scored their second power play goal of the evening. Tyler Ward had his original shot saved before going top shelf to tie the Saturday night league contest. Halfway through the second period, the Black Bears found themselves tied, 2-2.
 
Fifth Goal (3-2 UNH): Liam Devlin gave the Wildcats a lead early in the third period. Cam Gendron wrapped the puck around the net to Devlin. Left open in front of the net, the Wildcats forward snagged his squad's second lead of the evening.
 
Sixth Goal (4-2 UNH): The opponents from New Hampshire scored another power play goal. Alex Gagne was the beneficiary of the extra skater. Halfway through the third period, Maine trailed by two goals.
 
Seventh Goal (5-2 UNH): Filip Engaras added an empty net goal. The 5-2 lead stood as Maine fell in the series finale.
 
Notes: Victor Ostman set a University of Maine men's ice hockey record for saves in a period with his 27 first period saves. The sophomore only allowed one goal in the period, which came on the power play.
 
Ostman stopped 43 shots for the Black Bears, while Mike Robinson tallied 16 saves for UNH.
 
Maine went 0 for 2 on its power play opportunity, as the Wildcats were 3-5 on its player advantages.
 
The Black Bears blocked 11 shots and won 29 face-offs as a team.
 
Next: Maine is back on the ice next weekend at Providence. Puck drop for Friday, February 25 is set for 7:00 pm.
