Black Bears fall at Harvard

Smith tallies fifth double-double in the loss

Cambridge, Mass. -- Adrianna Smith registered her conference leading fifth double-double of the season in Maine's 84-56 loss at Harvard on Sunday afternoon.

Smith tallied her seventh double-digit scoring performance of the year with a team-high 16 points to go along with her 10 rebounds. Paula Gallego added eight points while Sarah Talon and Caroline Bornemann each chipped in seven points.

Maine, which won the rebounding battle 33-32, finished the day 22-of-53 from the floor (41.5) while hitting eight of 22 from three point distance.

The Black Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead but would not lead again.

Harvard stretched its lead to 12, 28-16, with five minutes remaining in the first half. Maine responded, putting together a 5-0 run to tighten the gap. Smith's bucket off an assist by Anne Simon, who returned to the court for the first time since her injury on Nov. 19, started the run. Rockwood's triple cut the deficit to seven with 3:04 left in the second quarter.

The seven point gap was as close as Maine could get.

Harvard, which entered the half leading by 13, began the third quarter with an 11-2 run to stretch its lead to 22.

Maine trimmed the lead down to 17 on a three from Bornemann in the third quarter but could not close the deficit any further.

Harvard completed a strong fourth quarter by locking up the victory, 84-56.

The Black Bears return to action on Dec. 22 when they travel to take on Milwaukee at 8 p.m. ET.
