Black Bears fall to Stony Brook

Simon leads Maine with 14 points

Bangor, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team suffered a 63-44 setback to visiting Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center. Anne Simon led Maine with 14 points, marking her 13th double-digit scoring performance in the first 14 games.

Despite falling behind early, Maine staged an early second half comeback. The Black Bears were able to use a 10-0 run in the third, outscoring the Seawolves 21-11 in the quarter, to pull within nine. However, it would be as close as the Black Bears could get in the second half.

Alba Orois, who entered the game as the America East leader in assists per game, registered nine points and five helpers, while Olivia Rockwood and Adrianna Smith each matched carer-highs with six points apiece.

Stony Brook, which came out on fire with a 10-for-19 mark from the floor in the opening quarter, controlled the boards with a 46-26 advantage in the rebounding column. The Seawolves, who posted a 20-2 edge in fastbreak points, were led by Anastasia Warren's 15 point.

Stony Brook opened the game with a 21-5 run in the first quarter before holding Maine to nine points in the second to enter the locker room with a 33-14 advantage at the break.

Maine posted its best quarter in the third, shooting 8-of-14 (57.1) during the period leading to a 21-11 scoring mark to tighten the gap. Trailing by 19 with 3:56 left in the third, Maine staged a 10-0 run. Simon and Caroline Bornemann got things rolling with back-to-back triples before Simon, working off a steal from Maeve Carroll, buried a jump to bring Maine within 11. Another jumper from Simon, again coming off a Stony Brook turnover, cut the lead to nine late in the third.

The Black Bears would enter the final period trailing by nine, but it would be as close as they would get.

Stony Brook would go on to outscore Maine 19-9 in the fourth to secure the 63-44 victory.

Maine returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 13 when it hosts New Hampshire in the Border Battle, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, at the Cross Insurance Center.
