Three Different Black Bears Score in Road Loss to #12 UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the #12 University of Massachusetts Lowell River Hawks, 5-3, on Friday evening in the Tsongas Arena.

First Goal (1-0 #12 UML): Lowell's top line combined for a goal in the opening minutes of the first period. Carl Berglund, Andre Lee, and Sam Knoblauch played tic-tac-toe until Berglund found the back of the net 8:28 into the Hockey East contest.

Second Goal (2-0 #12 UML): While on the penalty kill, Andranik Armstrong-Kingkade scored a short handed goal for the River Hawks. It was not the final goal of the first period for Lowell.

Third Goal (3-0 #12 UML): Three minutes after scoring his first goal of the evening, Armstrong-Kingkade added another goal in the opening 20 minutes. Lucas Condotta created an opportunity for his linemate, who capitalized on his second scoring chance of the contest.

Fourth Goal (3-1 #12 UML): After Victor Ostman made a huge save, Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup went the length of the ice and found the back of the net. Jakub Sirota collected the loose puck after Ostman stonewalled the River Hawks' scoring opportunity. The defenseman played the puck ahead to Schmidt-Svejstrup who did the rest. Early in the second period, Maine trailed by two goals.

Fifth Goal (4-1 #12 UML): With 00:13 remaining in the second period, Ben Meehan scored the fourth River Hawk goal of the evening. The forward's goal was a beneficiary of the traffic in front of the Maine net. At the end of two periods, Maine trailed 4-1.

Sixth Goal (4-2 #12 UML): Nolan Renwick pulled the Black Bears to within two with his second goal of the year. The freshman fired a shot that was blocked by a River Hawk defenseman. Renwick collected the deflected puck and shot again. This time, the forward's shot found its way into the back of the net. Early in the third period, Maine trailed 4-2.

Seventh Goal (5-2 #12 UML): The River Hawks added a 5-on-3 goal with 3:05 remaining in regulation. Ryan Brushett's goal was the final for Lowell.

Eighth Goal (5-3 #13 UML): Donavan Villeneuve-Houle scored the third and final goal for the Black Bears. With an empty net, the sophomore lit the lamp. Unfortunately, it was as close as Maine would get.

Notes: Connor Androlewicz stopped six shots for the Black Bears before Victor Ostman subbed into the game and stopped 20 scoring chances. Owen Savory tallied 20 saves for UMass Lowell.

Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup, Nolan Renwick, and Donavan Villeneuve-Houle all scored for the Black Bears.

Maine went 2 for 6 on its power play opportunities, as the River Hawks were 1-4 on its player advantages.

The Black Bears blocked six shots and won 27 face-offs as a team.

Next: The two teams will finish the Hockey East series tomorrow night. Puck drop for Saturday is set for 7:05 pm.
