Nick Charlton has announced the addition of transfer defensive lineman Xavier Mitchell. Mitchell, who has two years of eligibility remaining, will be eligible to compete in the fall of 2021.
Mitchell joins the Black Bears after spending four seasons at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. While at UA Pine Bluff, Mitchell appeared in 27 games while registering 119 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 11.0 sacks, and two fumble recoveries. A 2020 selection to Phil Steele's Preseason All-SWAC team, Mitchell posted 18 tackles, 4.0 for loss, with 3.0 sacks in the shortened, five-game spring season.
Mitchell started every game during the 2019 season and posted 48 tackles while tying for the team lead in sacks (5.0) and ranking tied for second on the team with 10.0 tackles for loss. During the 2019 session, Mitchell posted at least a half sack in three straight games, and four of the last five. During the 2018 campaign, Mitchell appeared in every game for UA Pine Bluff and ranked fourth on the team with 53 total stops while posting 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Mitchell posted a career-high 10 tackles against Morehouse and added nine at Southern.
