Bears endure Sunday sweep against River Hawks

ORONO - The Maine baseball program endured a Sunday sweep at the hands of UMass-Lowell this afternoon, as the River Hawks came to Mahaney and won the series with 1-0 and 10-3 wins over the Black Bears.

Game one was a phenomenal pitching duel, with Alex McKenney going all seven innings for Maine. McKenney's only rocky inning was the second, with a leadoff triple scoring on a sacrifice fly to give Lowell the slim lead. Maine's offense never responded, tallying just two Sean Lawlor hits and no runs.

Alex McKenney put forth his best effort so far this season, allowing just two hits and none past the fourth inning. McKenney struck out five against just a single walk, taking the hardest of losses by the 1-0 final.

Game two was also an exercise in futility for the Maine offense for the first five innings, as the River Hawks ended up tossing 12 consecutive scoreless innings to start the Sunday affair.

Maine struck finally in the fifth, when Connor Goodman and Scout Knotts laced back to back doubles to plate the first Maine run before Sean Lawlor drove a single up the middle to drive in Knotts. In the end, it simply wasn't enough as Lowell cruised to the 10-3 victory.

After a 1-3 weekend the Black Bears now sit at 16-17 overall and 11-13 within the America East conference. Two series remain in the regular season, as Maine will travel to Hartford next weekend before returning home the following week to close the regular season at Mahaney.
