Black Bears' season comes to a close against Stony Brook

Maine falls 15-9 in elimination game

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - On a cold and rainy day on Long Island, the 139th season of Maine baseball came to end at the hands of the Stony Brook Seawolves.

After a two-hour rain delay, the action got underway at 1:00 at Joe Nathan Field, starting with a scoreless first. Maine broke things open in the second with three straight doubles and an RBI groundout to take a 3-0 lead. It didn't last long, however, as Stony Brook responded with six two-out runs in their half of the frame to take a lead they would never relinquish. Three and four run efforts in the fourth and fifth inning put the Seawolves up 13-3, and a gutsy six-run eighth by the Black Bears was answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, as Stony Brook slugged their way to the 15-9 win.

For Maine, their season comes to a close with their second loss of the postseason, as they finish with an even 22-22 overall record, with 15 of those wins coming on the road. The Black Bears qualified for their eleventh consecutive postseason and will look to make another run at the program's 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022.
