McVicar, Charles to meet in WBBL Final

Former Black Bears set to square off in WBBL playoffs

Orono, Maine -- Former University of Maine women's basketball student-athletes Maddy McVicar ('20) and Chantel Charles ('16) will square off on May 16 in the Women's British Basketball League final at 10 a.m. ET at Leicester's Morningside Arena. McVicar currently competes for the Newcastle Eagles while Charles is a member of the London Lions.

"It's really exciting to make it to the championship, and even more so to be playing against another Black Bear," says McVicar. "It's been nice to be able to catch up with Chantel off the court, as she still carries the same infectious personality. As excited as I am to play against her on Sunday, I'd much rather have her on my team and wish her luck!"

McVicar has appeared in 20 games for the Eagles and ranks second on her team at 16.3 points per game to go along with 5.0 rebounds per game, 2.8 assists, and a 33.3% rate from downtown.

"It's been a tough season with the COVID-19 situation, but I'm excited with all that has happened that the season has been able to continue and we have it this far," says Charles, "It's quite cool that I'm playing against Maddy in this championship game. We were once teammates in college and now both are fighting for the championship. Knowing that she was playing in the league made me happy as I saw her grow as a player while catching a few Black Bear games over the seasons. I knew she would make a mark in the league.

Charles, who has seen action in 13 games this season for the Lions, is averaging 8.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.9 steals with a 42.6% mark from the floor.

Sunday's WBBL final can be seen live on Sky Sports YouTube as Charles and McVicar will dual for the WBBL title.
