Orono, Maine -- Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'what are you doing for others?'"
Jim Varner, class of 1957, was one of UMaine's first black student-athletes. Mr. Varner has done all he can and more, in a life of activism that started at the University of Maine, saw Varner walk side-by-side with figures such as Dr. King and Jesse Jackson in the fight for racial equality, the founding of the Bangor NAAC chapter, presiding over the Maine Human Rights Commission at its inception, all the way to today, as he still fights with a fervor that most 87-year-olds can only dream of.
The Black Bear Insider crew sat down with the legendary Mr. Varner for a conversation about life, love, and justice.
