ORONO - The University of Maine field hockey team remained perfect in America East competition, rattling off their fourth straight conference win with a 4-2 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon in Orono.
A quiet first quarter gave way to a second that was humming along at the same rate, until Brittany Smith found the back of the cage on a feed from Abby Webber to give Maine a 1-0 lead at the break.Â
Chloe Walton scored for the second straight game 42 seconds into the second half to build the Maine lead, until UNH finally got on the board a mere five minutes later.Â
Holding onto the slim one-goal lead, Maine looked to senior Hana Davis, as Davis danced around multiple defenders before firing a missile under the goalie's right arm to give Maine the 3-1 advantage.
UNH responded with another goal to put the pressure back on Maine, but the Black Bears responded as Chloe Walton took a beautiful feed from Julia Ross all the way to the house for her second goal of the day and fourth of the season to ice the 4-2 Maine win.Â
The Black Bears now sit at a perfect 4-0 within the America East conference, and a riding a seven-game America East winning streak dating back to the 2019 season. They've outscored conference opponents 10-4 so far, and have allowed just two goals in their last three games.Â
Maine now faces a true test on the road next, as they'll travel to take on Monmouth in New Jersey this coming Friday. Monmouth represents the last America East regular-season loss for Maine, a 4-2 contest in New Jersey on October 11, 2019. Push back is scheduled for 11:30am.
