Black Bears fall in series final, 7-1

ORONO - The University of Maine baseball team dropped the series final to UMBC on Sunday afternoon, falling by a 7-1 final at Mahaney Diamond.

As well as everything went for Maine on Saturday, it was nearly a complete 180-degree turn on Sunday. The Retrievers came out hot, with a 2-RBI triple in the first inning off Alex McKenney to start the scoring.

The 2-0 score held for four straight frames, until UMBC popped off for four runs in the fifth inning off a series of Maine miscues.

Maine's only offensive output game in the sixth, as Joe Bramanti gave a ball a ride to the deepest part of the park with the bases loaded, but the UMBC outfield was able to corral it and hold the damage to just a single sacrifice fly RBI. UMBC tacked on an insurance run in the seventh for good measure and cruised to the 7-1 victory.

Jeff Mejia continued to see the ball well, the only Maine hitter to collect two hits on the day while scoring Maine's lone run. He's recorded a hit in eight straight games, and has five multi-hit outings already. Scout Knotts and Sean Lawlor each recorded singles to round out Maine's four-hit effort, their lowest output of the 2021 season.

Alex McKenney was saddled with the loss after going 4.1 innings as today's starter, giving up five earned runs in an up-and-down outing for the senior. Jacob Small and Dillon Stimpson saw time on the hill, and Matthew Pushard closed the day with four strong innings of relief with just one hit allowed and six strikeouts.

Maine's record now sits at 7-4 overall and 2-1 within the conference. They'll get back to work next weekend, hosting Binghamton for a pair of doubleheaders at Mahaney next Saturday and Sunday.
