Softball Drops Season Opening Doubleheader at Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Massachusetts -- The University of Maine softball team was defeated by the Merrimack College Warriors in both games of their afternoon doubleheader by scores of 3-0 and 3-2.

Game One - Maine: 0 Merrimack: 3

The Warriors scored a single run in the bottom of the second, third, and sixth inning. Maddie Fornwalt lifted a sacrifice fly in the second to score Lucy Colarusso from third base. The three hitter, Abigail Amato, lined a homerun for her squad's second run of the contest. And Danielle Carmody finished the day for Merrimack with an RBI single in the sixth.

Notes:
  • Caitlyn Fallon (0-1) started the game and went 3.0 innings for the Black Bears. The sophomore allowed two earned runs and only allowed four hits. Lilly Volk went the final 3.0 innings, allowed one earned, and struck out three.
  • Keely Clark paced the Black Bears' offense with the lone hit and walk.

Game Two - Maine: 2 Merrimack: 3

Merrimack once again struck first. In the second game of the afternoon, Kelly Dovi's ground ball was mishandled, which allowed her to reach base and for Jenna Bradish to touch home. Following the miscue, Courtney Lanpher ripped a single. Dovi found her way home to give the Warriors an early 2-0 lead.

After pitching in the first game, Caitlyn Fallon found herself in the lineup for the final game of the day. The sophomore timed her swing perfectly and sent the pitch back where it came from. Singling up the middle, Fallon allowed Shanna Scribner to score from third after she tripled earlier in the inning.

Similar to what happened earlier in the game, Dovi reached on an error. Bradish scampered home on the Black Bear mistake. Maine trailed 3-1 after six complete.

In the top of the seventh inning, Kya Enos stole second after she reached base. Brianna Neely scored the junior with a sacrifice bunt. After Amanda MacBurnie reached via a walk, Grace McGouldrick had a chance to tie the team for her squad. The infielder lifted a fly ball that was snagged by a Merrimack outfielder. Trailing by a single run, Maine would drop the final game of the afternoon, 3-2.

Notes:
  • Gabbie Siciliano (0-1) went 2.1 innings for Maine. The academic junior allowed two earned runs and struck out four. Emily Reid logged one and two-thirds in the circle. She only allowed one hit while striking out two Warriors. Kyleigh O'Donnell went the rest of the way. Over the final two frames, she struck out one.
  • Caitlyn Fallon drove in a run with her single, while Kya Enos scored the other Maine run. Shanna Scribner tallied two hits in the doubleheader finale..

Next: Maine will travel to Sacred Heart for a doubleheader tomorrow, March 14th. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
