Black Bears Fall to Stony Brook in America East Title Game

Millan guides Maine with 20 points, seven rebounds

Orono, Maine -- In a game which featured 10 lead changes and four ties, the University of Maine women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Friday evening at The Pit after suffering a 64-60 loss to Stony Brook in the America East Championship game. The Black Bears end the 2020-21 season with a 17-3 overall mark and come up just short of earning their 10th conference crown.

Blanca Millan paced Maine's scoring as she finished with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. The fifth-year guard turned in double-digit scoring performances in all 20 of Maine's games this season. Millan ends her legendary career fifth on Maine's all-time scoring list with 1,974 points, 17th with 599 rebounds, second with 324 steals, and third with 216 three-point field goals made.

Maeve Carroll added 13 points while freshman Alba Orois chipped in a career-high eight points in 25 minutes of action off the bench.

Millan and Carroll were reach named to the America East All-Championship Team. Kelly Fogarty was named the representative for the Elite-18 award, presented to the championship participant with the highest grade point average (3.94).

Overall, the Black Bears finished the night 23-of-54 from the floor, including a 4-for-20 mark from three-point range.

Stony Brook was led by Anastasia Warren who poured in a game-high 31 points with nine rebounds. Overall, Stony Brook finished with a 42-22 advantage on the boards.

With Stony Brook leading by one late in the first quarter, Maine put together a 10-0 run. A bucket from Carroll put Maine on top before back-to-back buckets from Orois gave the Black Bears a 21-16 edge after one. Maine opened the second quarter with four straight points to grab a nine point advantage with 8:46 left in the half.

Maine kept charging as Fogarty's triple with 7:27 on the clock gave the hosts their largest lead of the night, 31-20.

With 2:46 left in the first half and Maine leading by 11, the game would flip as Stony Brook answered Maine's rush with a 19-2 run. The Seawolves closed the half on an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to three at the break. After a jumper from Millan started the scoring in the third quarter, Stony Brook would tally 11 unanswered points as the visitors were able to hold Maine scoreless over a 7:22 span.

The Seawolves climbed all the way back to take a six point lead before Anne Simon's triple stopped Maine's scoreless streak. A 5-0 run by the Black Bears brought them back to within a point with 1:56 remaining in the third.

Stony Brooks leads would hold at five with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. The Black Bears began to chip away with as Millan worked her way down low for a pair of buckets. The Millan hoops were the start of what would end up being a 10-4 run for Maine as Carroll worked her way inside to draw a foul. A pair of free throws from Carroll put Maine back on top, 56-55, with 2:33 on the clock.

The Seawolves responded with a 5-0 run to retake a four point lead, 60-56.

The lead would remain at four with 31-seconds left. Working out of a timeout, Fanny Wadling found Millan for a bucket as the Black Bears found themselves back within a pair late. Wadling would come with a steal but two Maine attempts, one coming off an offensive rebound try by Millan, would not fall as Stony Brook regained possession on a rebound from Asiah Dingle. Dingle would draw the foul and hit both free throws as Stony Brook's lead grew to 64-60 with 0.7 on the clock. Maine would run out of time as Stony Brook earned the title and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
