Women's Hockey Drops Merrimack With Late Goal from Kuoppala

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team defeated the Merrimack College Warriors, 2-1, on Saturday Afternoon in Lawler Rink.
 
First Goal (1-0 Maine): Rahel Enzler tipped home the Black Bears first goal of the afternoon early in the first period. Celine Tedenby fired a shot from the point that was deflected by the freshman forward. Taylor Leech was also credited with an assist on Maine's early goal.
 
Second Goal (1-1): Raice Szott tied the Hockey East contest with 1:40 left in the second period. It was the Warriors first goal in six games. The freshman's first career goal came on a deflection with traffic in front of Loryn Porter. Heading into the final intermission, the conference foes were tied at one goal apiece.
 
Third Goal (Maine 2-1): On a breakaway with just under four minutes remaining in the contest, Ida Kuoppala gave her squad a late 2-1 lead. Morgan Trimper forced a turnover, collected the loose puck, and found a streaking Kuoppala. The forward made quick work of her opportunity and scored the game winning goal for the Black Bears.
 
Notes: Loryn Porter stopped 24 shots for the Black Bears, while Emma Gorski tallied 25 saves for Merrimack.
 
Maine went 1 for 2 on their power play opportunities, as the Warriors were 0-2 on its player advantages.
 
The Black Bears blocked 12 shots as a team.
 
Next: Maine will return to the ice tomorrow, Sunday, February 14th. Puck drop for the series finale is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
