ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team tied the University of Vermont Catamounts, 1-1, on Saturday evening in the Alfond Arena.
First Goal (1-0 Vermont): Halfway through the first period, the Catamounts scored the first goal of the evening. Dovar Tinling was the beneficiary of some great Vermont passing. Isak Walther brought the puck up the ice before dishing it off to Tinling. 9:17 into the opening frame, Maine trailed by a goal.
Second Goal (1-1): Donavan Villeneuve-Houle evened the Saturday night contest with a goal of his own at the 16:21 mark of the second period. Gabe Carriere tried to play the puck out of his zone but, instead, passed the puck directly to Villeneuve-Houle. The sophomore scored one of the easiest goals of his career. After two complete, the game was tied 1-1.
The two squads skated to a scoreless third and overtime period. For NCAA purposes, the game ended in a tie. Since Vermont won the shoot-out, 1-0, the Catamounts will earn a Hockey East victory.
Notes: Matthew Thiessen stopped 16 shots for the Black Bears, while Gabe Carriere tallied 50 saves for Vermont.
Maine went 0 for 4 on their power play opportunities, as the Catamounts were 1-5 on its player advantages.
The Black Bears blocked six shots and won 24 face-offs as a team.
