ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the University of Vermont Catamounts, 1-0, on Friday evening in the Alfond Arena.
The two squads finished regulation tied 0-0. Maine's best opportunity was thwarted by Gabe Carriere. Adam Dawe and Donavan Villeneuve-Houle had a 2-on-1 breakaway. Dawe dished the puck over to his linemate who fired a quick shot. Carriere covered his crease and kept the game scoreless.
First Goal (1-0 Vermont): Halfway through the overtime sudden death period, Cory Babichuk scored the game winning goal. With Philip Lagunov in-front of Victor Ostman, the Catamounts scored the game winning goal.
Notes: Victor Ostman stopped 23 shots for the Black Bears, while Gabe Carriere tallied 23 saves for Vermont.
Maine went 0 for 4 on their power play opportunities, as the Catamounts were 1-5 on its player advantages.
The Black Bears blocked six shots and won 24 face-offs as a team.
Next: The two Hockey East teams will finish the weekend series tomorrow, Saturday, December 4. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
