Black Bears erase 19 point deficit to defeat Dartmouth, 65-53

Maine outscores Dartmouth 28-8 in the final quarter

Bangor, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team erased a 19-point deficit, outscoring Dartmouth 28-8 in the final quarter to earn a 65-53 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Maine, which shot just 22.6 percent in the first half, turned the offense around to post a 55.2 percent showing from the field in the second half while hitting 6-of-11 from three point range and 10-of-15 free throws to seal the victory. The Black Bears forced 18 turnovers and finished the contest with 11 steals.

Anne Simon posted her sixth career double-double as the junior led all scorers with 21 points while matching a career-high with 11 rebounds. Alba Orois added 17 points and six assists while Caroline Bornemann went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc on her way to career-high 15 point outing. Maeve Carroll chipped in eight points and 11 rebounds, her fifth double-digit rebounding performance of the season and her third in as many games.

The Black Bears fell behind by 19 with 5:44 left in the first half as Dartmouth knock down back-to-back triples, extending its lead to 25-6. Maine would enter the half trailing 30-17.

In a tale of two halves, Maine was able to turn things around in the second half, outscoring the Big Green 48-23 to flip the script and complete the comeback victory.

The Black Bears, who trailed by 13 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter, were able to close the gap to six with a 7-0 run. Bornemann's triple off a feed from Orois started the sprint before two free throws from Orois and a bucket, off a turnover, from Carroll cut the lead to 43-37.

Dartmouth would go back up by eight but Maine would again answer, this time with a 9-0 run. After a Simon bucket, another triple from Bornemann brought Maine within three. Abbe Laurence's offensive rebound put back cut things to one before Simon, the league's leader in steals per game, picked off another one and took it coast-to-coast for a bucket and Maine's first lead of the afternoon.

The game would be tied three more times over the next three minutes before Maine put things away.

A 6-0 run, keyed by a triple from Orois, gave the Black Bears a 58-52 edge with 1:57 remaining in regulation.

The lead would not dip below five the rest of the way as Maine closed out the contest on a 7-0 run to complete the 65-53, comeback victory.

Maine closes out non-conference action when it hosts Northeastern on Wednesday at the Cross Insurance Center at 1 p.m. Tickets are available at TicketMaster.com or by visiting the Cross Insurance Center box office.
