Maine dominates battle of unbeatens, downs Cal 4-1

Seventh straight win for the Black Bears

ORONO - The University of Maine field hockey program put forth their most well-rounded effort of the season on Friday afternoon, capturing their seventh straight win over the California Golden Bears by a 4-1 final.

With the win, Maine improves their America East record to 4-0 and sits atop the conference as the only unbeaten team.

The first quarter was a frustrating one for Maine, as they whiffed on five consecutive corner attempts and ended up locked in at 0-0 after a quarter. Hana Davis broke through to get the Black Bears going three minutes into the second quarter, scoring her fifth goal of the season unassisted. Julia Ross struck next late in the quarter for her first goal of the season, sending Maine into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Corner attempt woes did not pursue Maine into the second half, as Poppy Lambert converted the first corner of the half to put Maine up 3-0 just 1:22 into the half. Cal got on the board a few minutes later to slow the Black Bears down, but only until Chloe Walton carried the ball deep and buried a shot off the backhand midway through the fourth to ice the 4-1 Black Bears win.

With the win, Maine improves to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference. Next up for the red hot Bears is UC-Davis on Sunday in Orono, a 1:00 start.
