Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball moved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in America East play after it completed a weekend sweep of the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a 74-51 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Black Bears featured a balanced scoring attack with four players in double-figures, led by
Blanca Millan's game-high 21 point effort. Millan, who has finished in double-digits in each of Maine's first nine games this season, added seven rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists on the day. The 21 point day moved Millan into 20th on the America East all-time scoring list with 1,754 career points.
Maeve Carroll put together her best effort of the season with 14 points, six rebounds and eight assists.
Dor Saar, who also tallied eight assists, chipped in 13 points and five boards while
Kelly Fogarty rounded out the double-digit performances with 12 points on four triples.
Maine, which never trailed in the contest, led by as many as 23 after an impressive 23-of-57 shooting performance, a 10-of-19 showing from 3-point range, and a 14-for-20 mark at the free throw stripe. The Black Bears assisted on 19 of their 25 field goals while forcing 22 Highlander turnovers, a season-high for Maine's defense.
Maine built a nine point edge in the first half when Fogarty's triple with 1:54 left in the opening frame ended a 7-2 run.
The Black Bears were able to create a nice cushion in the second, holding NJIT to just seven points over the quarter. Leading by six with just under eight minutes left in the half, Carroll took advantage of a Highlander turnover, turning the mishap into a jumper to begin a 10-3 Maine run. A jumper from Simon, off an offensive rebound by Millan, came prior to a three by Saar as Maine took its largest lead of the half, 34-21.
The Black Bears' offense continued to click in the third as the hosts scored their most total points in a quarter, 21, of the game. A 6-0 run, with four of the points coming from the free throw lane, extended the Maine lead out to 21 with 3:49 left in the third.
The lead stretched to 23, the largest deficit of the contest, just 32-seconds into the fourth. The advantage would not shrink under 16 the rest of the way as Maine closed the contest on a 7-0 run to seal a 74-51 victory.
Maine returns to action next weekend when it hosts Vermont for a two-game set beginning on Saturday, Jan 16 at 1 p.m.
