CHARLESTON, South Carolina - The University of Maine softball team closed out play in South Carolina with a 7-0 shutout victory over the Coppin State Eagles on Sunday morning at Patriots Point on the campus of the College of Charleston.
Maine started off the scoring in the top of the second as
Brianna Neely hit a two-out RBI-single.
Shanna Scribner scored on the single and gave the Black Bears the one run lead.
In the top of the 5th inning, Maine extended the lead on a couple of base running plays. Neely reached base with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a base-hit bunt from
Emma Larke. With runners on the corners. Maine completed a double steal to score their second run of the game.
Hailey Perry grounded out to third and advanced Larke to third.
Rebecca Findley was hit by a pitch and pinch ran for by
Kya Enos. Maine attempted a double steal again. This time Larke scored on a throwing error to give the Black Bears a 3-0 lead.
Maine kept scoring in the top of the 6th inning as Neely crushed a two-out RBI-double to left-center field. Scribner scored for the second time, and the duo extend the lead to 4-0 Maine.
The Black Bears added three runs in the top of the 7
th. Perry singled to first base, advanced to second a wild pitch, and found her way to third on a ground out by Findley. The captain scored on the second wild pitch of the inning to make it a five-run lead for the Black Bears. Maine would load the base up and score two more runs on back-to-back walks. The 7-0 lead would prove to be the final.
Notes:
- Emily Reid got the start in the circle for the Black Bears and went three innings. She pitched three shutout innings and struck out a batter.
- Kyleigh O'Donnell (W, 2-1) came in relief, allowed two, while striking out six.
- Neely had two two-out hits, three RBI, and scored a run.
- Larke, Perry, and Clark each had a hit and scored a run.
- Scribner scored three runs.
