BANGOR, Maine -- Through 15 lead changes and 10 ties, the University of Maine was able to overcome Stony Brook in overtime, snapping the Seawolves' nation-long 22-game win streak by outlasting the visitors in overtime, 64-62, in front of 2,093 fans at the Cross Insurance Center.
Maddy McVicar posted a career-high 28 points in the win, knocking down 6-of-11 triples while adding six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Anne Simon added her second double-double of the season by posting 12 points and matching a career-best with 11 boards while
Maeve Carroll chipped in her eighth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 boards.
Maine, which assisted on 16 of its 24 made field goals, trailed by one with 2:38 left in overtime. McVicar put the Black Bears on top by a pair with her sixth 3-pointer of the game off an offensive rebound by
Dor Saar. Following a missed layup by Stony Brook and a big defensive board by Carroll, a jumper by Saar with 40-seconds on the clock put the game away. After Stony Brook cut the lead to a pair, Saar would grab an offensive rebound off her own miss as the clock expired.
The first quarter featured six lead changes and four ties with neither team extending its lead out to more than three over the first 10-minutes. The disadvantage remained tight throughout the majority of the second period before Stony Brook took its largest lead of the first half, 21-17, with 2:47 left in the half. Just over two minutes later, McVicar pulled up and knocked down a triple while drawing the foul. Her free throw gave her double-digits and knotted the game at 21-all. A late three by Stony Brook sent the game into the break with the visitors leading, 24-21.
The Black Bears had a strong third quarter as they were able to outscore Stony Brook, 23-15, over the stretch.
With the Seawolves leading 30-26 early in the third, Maine built a 7-0 run to take a three point lead. Simon's driving layup and a deep pull-up jumper by
Kelly Fogarty tied the game at 30-30 before a three by McVicar put the Black Bears up 33-30 with 3:49 left in the third.
Stony Brook battled back to take a one point edge with under a minute left in the third before Maine ended the period strong. A triple by
Anna Kahelin came before Saar's triple at the buzzer sent Maine into the fourth quarter holding a five-point advantage.
The Black Bears built off the third-quarter buzzer beater, opening the fourth on an 8-2 run. Free throws by McVicar, a three from Saar and another triple by McVicar gave Maine its largest lead of the game, 52-41, with 7:33 left in regulation.
Stony Brook responded with a 12-3 run to trim the deficit down to a pair. A free throw by Cheyenne Clark cut the lead to one. Clark missed the second free throw but was able to get her own rebound before drawing another foul. After missing the first, Clark hit the second, ultimately sending the game into overtime.
The teams would trade the lead five times in the extra frame before Maine put it away, snatching its sixth-straight win, 64-62.
Maine is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 when it travels to meet New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
