Four Black Bears Finish in Double-Digits in Victory at Hartford

Simon leads all scorers with game-high 18

W. HARTFORD, Conn. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team used four double-digit scorers and a 19-2 advantage in points off turnovers to help lead it to a 69-52 victory at Hartford on Saturday afternoon.

Anne Simon registered the 12th double-digit scoring performance of her career, leading all scorers with a game-high 18 points to go along with five rebounds. Maeve Carroll tallied 10 of her 12 points in the first half while McVicar also tossed in a dozen with five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Dor Saar padded the stats with 11 points, four rebounds and seven assists, marking the seventh time this season in which Saar has handed out five or more assists in a single game.

The Black Bears, who assisted on 16 of their 26 buckets, executed at a high-efficiency rate all game long, finishing 26-of-57 from the floor (45.6) and 9-of-24 from 3-point range.

Maine's defense was able to force the Hawks into 18 turnovers while limiting Hartford to just 18-of-55 from the field, including an 8-for-24 effort in the first half alone.

The Black Bears, who never trailed in the contest, jumped out to a four point edge before Hartford fought back to knot the score with just over three minutes left in the first. The tie would be the first and last of the game as Maine would lead the rest of the way.

A 9-2 run at the end of the first period lifted Maine's lead to 17-10 after a triple from Fogarty and a driving bucket from Anna Kahelin put Maine up by seven. After outscoring Hartford 12-0 in the paint in the first quarter, Maine went to work from outside early in the second. Anne Simon's triple gave Maine its first double-digit lead, 22-12, with just 1:25 gone in the second quarter.

Leading by nine, Maine would put together an 8-0 run with back-to-back triples by Saar and McVicar stretching the lead out to 17 with 3:26 remaining in the first half.

The Hawks closed out the second quarter with a 6-0 run of its own as Maine entered the break wih a 35-24 advantage.

As it has done much of the year, Maine put together a strong third period, outscoring the Hawks 20-13 over the 10-minute stretch.

The second half opened with a 13-4 run by the Black Bears, helping them to build a commanding lead. A jumper from Simon and a triple by Saar started the sprint. With Maine leading by 14, Fogarty and Saar were able to knock down consecutive treys, stretching the Maine lead out to 48-28 with 5:52 left in the third.

Hartford responding, chipping the deficit down to 14, before Maine finished on a 6-2 run. Triples from Fogarty, and McVicar's at the buzzer, sent Maine into the fourth quarter on top, 55-37.

The run continued into the fourth where the Black Bears were able to take their largest lead of the contest after piecing together a 10-2 sprint. Simon began the final quarter with a pair of buckets, expanding the Maine lead out to 22 with 9:21 to play.

The Black Bears cruised the rest of the way as Hartford was only able to chip the deficit down to 15. McVicar finished the road victory strong with a pair of free throws as Maine moved to 5-4 in America East play with a 69-52 decision.
